AFRICA ELECTRONICA
PHILLIPS DE PURY & COMPANY
LONDON

While composing his installations Arne Quinze is most inspired observing how cities are formed and civilizations are organized. For his exhibition ‘Africa Electronica’ at Phillips de Pury, London, Arne Quinze presents adaptations of Stilthouses, Bidonvilles, new Lakeviews and African Masks.

The basic shapes and textures of the medium determine the art of Quinze almost in the same sense African art is formed. Primordial purity, simplicity, and earthy textures are terms related to both these artistic expressions. The lively spirit of Africa is reflected in his way of sculpting and painting creating pure and basic forms. Quinze is an obsessive collector of used materials which he recycles giving their lines new life in the manifestation of his vision. Editing what has been found he redefines the necessary layers and textures in his composition. He aspires to improve the imperfections in his quest to create the perfect line even though this line might not exist.

Contrary to the similarity with African culture Quinze uses ‘electric’ colors like white, black, fluorescent orange and red generating an electric feeling. The use of highly fluorescent paint on top of the re-used material contradicts the implementation of the basic ground layers in his work. Moreover, he realizes a multi media mix with several video installations to emphasize this contradiction and bring together different time zones and lines with moving images, rhythms and dimensions.
